Ebert: We spend too much time hiding illness

I have received a lot of advice that I should not attend the festival. I'm told that paparazzi will take unflattering pictures, people will be unkind, etc.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. As a journalist I can take it as well as dish it out.
He's braver than I would be in that situation. Also nice to see Gattaca opening the Overlooked Film Festival.

I actually admire him for being so bold and courageous. He doesn't look like himself anymore, but at least, he's not trying to hide the illness.

Our culture requires that no one should have to be reminded of his (her) mortality. When we see a friend, relative, someone we knew as vibrant and full of life in a state that is unpleasant, it just reinforces the fear, "what if I'm next?" I'm sure Roger has been through Hell and knows that life is fragile...it might be the last time he enjoys the events that bring him happiness so who cares what anyone else thinks!! I say dance when you have a chance, you never know when the music is going to end.
